An internship of PhD student from UniMi in Ghent

Isa Mohammed Alkali performed his second internship within the NAWA APM Project at Ghent University (Department of Internal Medicine, Reproduction and Population Medicine) from 1st of March 2022 till 30th of April 2022, under the supervision of Prof. Dr Ann Van Soom.

During the stay, he was trained on the routine laboratory activities of the Department including collection of samples from slaughterhouse and actively engaged in their weekly scientific and departmental meetings.

The main research project of Isa Alkali is gonadal tissue banking in animal models thus for the sake of continuity of the research activities, he performed series of experiments involving bovine ovarian tissue vitrification, culture, and cytokine profiling of spent media. Additionally, he was trained on histological procedures at the Department of Morphology under the supervision of Prof. Wim Van Den Broeck. The PhD student therefore acquired various histological skills including tissue processing, sectioning and staining procedures, indispensable for his research project.

During this period, a physical supervisory visit was performed by a post-doctoral researcher from home institution (University of Milan/Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science) in person of Dr Martina Colombo. The work of PhD student was assessed very positively.
