An internship of PhD student from Belgium in Milan
On January 9th, 2022 - January 31st, 2022, Hiba Ali Hassan (a PhD student from Belgium, Department
of Internal medicine, Reproduction and Population Medicine, UGent) performed her research
internship in Milan. Her supervisors were: prof. Gaia Cecilia Luvoni and dr Martina Colombo.
In her PhD research Hiba focuses on improving feline semen cryopreservation by addition of a special
compound protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage. During the stay in Milan, the PhD
student collected and cryopreserved samples (epididymal feline semen), which will be further
assessed during her stay in Wrocław (UPWr). Also, she optimized fluorescent staining protocol
(CellROX) for dog/cat semen.
Additionally to those main goals of the internship, she learnt how to collect and assess cat and dog
oocytes and learnt almost all there protocols for evaluating spermatozoa in small animals.
Participating in the team’s daily work and scientific discussions she gained not only knowledge and
skills, but built a background for further collaboration and networking.
