International workshops on reproductive biotechniques within NAWA ScienceNet project - part IV: Spermatozoa Function and Conservation in Large and Small Animals

On July 22nd, 2022, the fourth part of the series of workshops organized as part of the NAWA ScienceNet project (no. PPI/APM/2019/1/00044) on reproductive biotechniques took place. The role of the course master of the event passed into the hands of prof. Christine Aurich and prof. Sabine Schäfer-Somi from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. The co-organizers were: the Department of Reproduction and Clinic of Farm Animals, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (ScienceNet project leader), EDRA and project partners: Ghent University (Belgium), L'École Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort (France) and the University of Milan (Italy). The event was held under the patronage of the Committee of Veterinary Sciences and Reproductive Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The title of this part of the workshop was: "Spermatozoa Function and Conservation in Large and Small Animals", and its subject matter concerned the advanced assessment of sperm characteristics (studies of apoptosis, lipid peroxidation, cholesterol transport in spermatozoa) and their cryopreservation - it was mainly focused on dogs, but there was also information on horses, cats, pigs or human and rat sperm. Several guests from all over the world were invited to give lectures: Dagmar Waberski (Germany), Daniel SR Angrimani (Brazil), Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan (Thailand), Tricia Rowlison (USA), Yulia Makayeva (Australia), Pierre Comizzoli (USA). Lectures were also presented by project participants: Wojciech Niżański, Sylwia Prochowska and Zuzanna Ligocka (Poland, Wrocław) and Sabine Schäfer-Somi and Christine Aurich (Austria).

Despite the plans and hopes to conduct these workshops in the stationary formula, eventually this part also took place on-line. Over 300 people from different countries around the world participated in the workshops (directly as well as by watching recorded lectures). The date of the next part of the workshop was set for September 16th, 2022.
